Title: John's Letter and Book Arts
Post by: John Red Beard on December 02, 2017, 02:31:17 AM
Starting a new thread because this stuff is very different than the art in my other one.

I'm interested in arts and crafts having to do with writing, typography, and books. In particular, I practice calligraphy, design fonts, and recently I've been learning bookbinding.

Here's a sample of my calligraphy.

Here's a sample of my first font, still a work in progress. It's a comic book lettering font based on my hand lettering. It's called "CnD Comic Hand" because I'm calling myself Cloak and Dagger Foundry when it comes to making fonts. "Ironics" is a font style I came up with to express sarcasm. I'm not the first person to think of using reverse italics for this purpose, but I'm hoping to help popularize it.

And finally (for now), here's a couple of my first attempts at book binding. I'm hoping to sell hand-made journals, once I get good enough.

That is a rare hobby to get into artistic style writing.  You are good at it.

This is interesting stuff! Calligraphy is a neat art. And that comic book font: nice and neat but still with a handwritten feel. Plus has lowercase! I've been searching for a font similar to that myself, as most free ones look too "comedic" for the tone of my project. Also, I'm totally gonna hop on the "ironics" wagon.

I'd buy a custom journal or few from you if I had the ability. Already thought of some designs I'd like on 'em if I ever get the chance.

Thanks! I'm planning to release the font for free some time in the next two or three months. I've added a set of dingbats to go with it. I just need to refine the kerning and it should be ready.

Two new notebooks.

This first one I made using a piece of decorative paper on the cover.

And this one I made as a proof-of-concept for possibly making custom notebooks with people’s characters on the cover.

I finished two new books this weekend. The covers are faux leather.

Wow, that's a really interesting set of hobbies. I've never really met anyone who's into calligraphy and book-binding before! Those notebooks look really nice, I love the one with the christmas tree design. Perfect for the holiday season coming up.

Here's some of my recent calligraphy practice, with Twin Peaks quotes in red and a Welcome to Night Vale quote in blue.
