Title: What started your interest in anthropomorphic characters?
Post by: Imperium Lupi on August 09, 2017, 12:46:20 AM
What started your interest in anthropomorphic characters? What film, novel or experience?

Answers on a postcard... or here.

I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours.

It is hard to say when I first liked them.  I think they are more expressive than human characters.  I like the feeling of fur and find many of them cute in comparison to humans.  My favorite book is Watership Down which I read once a year.  But as a kid I loved Aristocats and Oliver and Company.

I think it is often hard to pin down the first moment of anything. In the 80's and some way into the 90's cartoon characters were anatomically well drawn and often anthro, with everything from Thundercats to Gummi Bears and Gargoyles. I loved all that.

Have you read The Plague Dogs? Same author as Watership.

Oh dear, that's a tough one. I've liked the idea of human-like animals longer than I can remember. I've liked Donald Duck, Yoshi, Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny et cetera for longer than I can remember. I always really liked animals in general (with a few exceptions), and they've always appealed more to me than humans. Though I didn't think much of it until I actually found the furry fandom, which even was after I found Pokémon.

This is true. I suppose we cannot remember being seated in front of a WB short for the fist time.

I found Yoshi very appealing as a kid. It was the boots. Plus I'm a dinosaur fan! Dinotopia is my second favourite book, right after Redwall.

Yes, he has a lot to answer for. The voice! Brian Bedford, RIP.

And the animation, so sketchy and yet smooth. They don't make 'em like they used to.

And the rest, as they say, is history. :)

Tails, from Sonic, introduced me to the fandom, though I don't really like the franchise anymore. Now I'm more into Original characters than portrayal of cannon ones.

Elder scrolls. Dem argonians.

The fact that they could breathe in water was always really cool to me so i played 'em often. Guess it kinda affected me, aheh.

I loved Tails. :) The old games are still cool.

What is an Argonian? I am intrigued.

Semi-aquatic reptillians in the elder scrolls.
Notable for being able to breathe water, being reptillian, being immune to poisons, and repeatedly proving to be badass when united

The short time I was in the FNaF fandom was what sparked my interest.

Argonians look and sound badass.

FNaF? I could google... Five Nights at Freddies.  ^_^

I would have to say movies for sure. My absolute favorite movies all contained at the least speaking animals if not anthropomorphic ones. Especially Robin Hood, an animated version of David Copperfield, Cats Don't Dance, and not to mention just about every cartoon playing at the time including Pinky and the Brain and the rest of the Animaniacs. Also really got into the Redwall series by Brian Jacques. *shrugs* what can I say? lol

All sounds good to me.  :) Say no more.

Most animated films and such are anthropomorphic. There's nothing strange or fringe about it.

Yes.

Star Wing, as it was called here for trademark infringement reasons, on the SNES, was enthralling when I was 8 or so.

When I was young we called them anthropomorphic characters, furry grew out of a need for a snappier word I suppose.

My love started when i was little or litteler i had an imaginary friend named Mittie, an Arctic fox with human specifikations, though she was technically feral in design she had this vest on and could speak human language as well as her own called Prex :3 that all just grew after my interest in writing storylines grew too and i developed what i have now :3

I've seen plenty of cartoons with anthropomorphic characters when I was a kid. I was like 5 or 6 when I first saw them, so I can't really tell when that happened.
Few years later I got access to the internet, saw some **censor** up shit and enjoyed it. And boom, I'm a furry.

Edit: had to edit this because of some typos.

Hm well for me it was when a few of my personal friends started talking to me about their own interests and their own personas. They showed me pictures of various types and I just took interest in it.

Oh man, that's a question with a complex answer. Okay so, I used to like films with talking animal characters when I was little, animal flicks, anthropomorphic or not, were my jam, until I got into anime. I was really big into kemonomimi characters, with ears and tails and over time I found characters with more animal traits (Stuff like snouts rather than noses) until eventually it culminated in the obvious "Ho geez, I guess I'm a furry now" moment when I found myself seeking out the old anthro animal cartoons.

Quite a few things inspired me. Cartoons like Sonic SatAM, Gargoyles, TMNT, The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show; movies like Secret of NIHM, the Rescuers, Disney's Robin Hood and American Tail; and games like Tail Concerto, Banjo Kazooie, Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast. Then what truly locked me in was a visual chat game called Furcadia. That was where I first created my fursona, who started out as a simple, generic wolf prince. But as I roleplayed more, I began to evolve a story around him and got ever more creative.

A fine list. Unusual on your list: Gargoyles was exceptionally good, through my nostalgia goggles. And we had Altered Beast, it came with our Mega Drive (Genesis). Woefully short, but great artwork and concept. Also Rocket Knight? I enjoyed that.

I've always been fond of animals but weren't fond of furries for a long time.

When I started becoming a furry I was struggling with my sexuality and wanted a place to feel like I belong, I found a very good furry comic and started reading it and one thing led to another.

I'd say it's probably a combination of getting along with animals quite well, enjoying traditionally drawn animated movies involving anthros / feral animals, (lion king, balto, etc.) having ran into this weird thing called "furry raves" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFXeWQ0Xfms) on youtube, as a kid, and noticing how some of them were actually, aesthetically, really well designed and drawn characters.

Probably a little wiff of therianism helped as well...

Oh, and don't forget my insaturatable thirst for answers in the scientifical concept of animals reaching the evolutionary state / capabilities of humans, and how such societies would look like, and what sort of interactions would occur between diffirent species.

Yes... Secretly, I'm studying all of you...

I do! But that didn't have much to do with why I like furries haha xD

I actually have no idea what exactly started it because I have always had an interest in anthropomorphic animals and have been writing/drawing/making characters since a very, very young age.

My first drawings were all of cats, though not necessarily anthropomorphic, and I was like, two years old. (At least I think I was since that's what my mom said, and it was before I even started talking . . .) I think I was somewhere around the age of four when I "made" my first character (though he was based on a stuffed animal) and, especially after I got more stuffed animals to add to this cast of characters, I started writing these "stories" about them, some of which I still have today. (Though most of the stories were incomprehensible drawings put together with no text, and only I can understand what is actually happening in them). These characters were this sort of mix of anthro and "feral", because they often stood up like anthros, and they acted anthropomorphic, but they also at times walked on all fours and acted more like normal animals. Watching a lot of Disney and other animal cartoons greatly influenced my art/stories as well.

2007 was the beginning of my dog phase, where I mainly started writing stories about dogs (which were still anthropomorphic, but lived in a world similar to ours and looked like regular dogs with owners etc.) and I even made a "fursona" in 2010 (though at the time I still didn't actually know about fursonas or furries) but this started to change in 2011, especially by the end of 2011, when I became obsessed with Sonic and my main focus was this weird fancomic (which started out as a joke). Unfortunately for a while, all my art looked like bad Sonic art and rip-offs, I even tried reviving my original cast of characters but they looked like Sonic. I rewrote that fanfic like three more times until finally I decided to stop drawing Sonic and turn my art back into original stuff, this took a while but I have finally regained my art style.

Q: What started your interest in anthro characters?
A: Sonic- that game Sonic Adventure, it blew my mind. Since then, its pretty much been my thing to enjoy and love anthropomorphic anima;s.

I blame Beatrix Potter for my furry love. Also my mom, she liked animals and use to read me loads of stories with anthro animals in them. Disney was the main factor for me since I loved their characters. I use to write stories with talking animals and anthros when I was a little kid. I didn't know there were others like me until I got older.

When your a lil kid most movies and that seem to be animal based it's that or annoying fairytales and stuff some of whih are ok most are a bit weird tho. I could only really find animals relatable and cool.
