Title: Michen's drawings V2
Post by: Michen_S on October 28, 2016, 12:21:13 PM
Well, here I go again.

It was about time I finished this. I had an art trade with Firox from The Furry Forums, and here's Flareon from my part. I tried my best, but there are still a lot of things off. Guess that just means I can learn a lot just from this drawing I can take with me for my next drawing (that's why I made the art trade in the first place).

Here's one of my first drawings I made since I started drawing as a hobby. It doesn't look too shabby for a beginner. Yeah, that's all I got. It pictures Michen, my snow leopard fursona. I'll redraw it later, though it might take a while before I can start with it...

Constructive criticism is more than welcome. If any of you can't see the picture, let me know and I'll try to fix it.

Edit: Oh, before I forget. Any new drawings will also be posted on my DeviantArt account (http://michensneeuwhart.deviantart.com/).

Better than I expected honestly. You improved a lot since drawing Michen. Of course there's still a long road to go through, but it's looking good at the start.

Thanks, I do my best. It may take a while before I finished the next one. I need to learn to not try to draw too far above my current skill level, which is my main... erm... drawer's block, so to say. But when it's finally getting good for someone of my skill level, that's when I'm happy I made it. I might not be very good yet, but I'll keep trying.

This is a mandrake, pretty much Etrian Odyssey's iconic enemy. It's effect depends on the game. I didn't take too much time to make this (as I'm actually supposed to work on something else), so I decided to finish the lineart and upload it as is. I made this with pencils and paper rather than my 3DS, but making a picture with my 3DS is not the best way to share it. I'll try to find a better way for next time...

About time I uploaded something new. This drawing is a character based on the forest folk of Etrian Odyssey, though I might've made a few changes here and there...? Anyways, this is one of my first attempts at drawing human-like creatures. The arms and legs were a pain to do, so I decided to leave the feet as is. If I tried making the feet and hands better I wouldn't have posted this before the end of the next month...

By the way, from this place I thank my dad for giving me the drawing book for sinterklaas. Without it, the drawing would probably take even longer and still look a lot worse. I doubt he'll see this, but he probably already knows anyways.

humanoids are hard to draw.

Main things I see that could be improved is the head is too small. THe body looks roughly ten, to eleven head lengths tall eye balli'n it. "Ideal" proportions are seven to eight heads tall. Anything more then nine makes the head look disproportionally small, and unnatural.

Hands and feet are too small as well, but it is entirely forgivable. AS both are hardddd to render correctly even with experience.

There are some things I think you got correct tho. Like the  elbows lining up with the waist, and the "rhythm" of the legs.

Hopefully that helps some! :)

Thanks for the feedback. I actually tried to make the figure 8 heads long, but I think I accidentally made the head smaller in the progress...

Yeah, that kind of stuff happens to me all the time. It used to be a lot more frustrating, but eventually I learned to fix height through trial an error.

You're welcome. :)

Sorry for the long wait. Again.... I tried to play around with shades a bit, it's not very well done nor very visible on the scan, so I'll check how to solve that.

This drawing is recognisable as Jesus on the cross for some, except it seems... off. Lightly said. There are some Christians who don't like what I did here. I chose to do it this way with a reason, that being that this simply appeals more to me. I also did this because I knew not everyone liked it (I actually wanted to make it even worse, but a friend advised me not to). Some Christian groups sometimes critisize other Chhristian groups with disastrous results, sometimes with the best intentions. My personal faith seem to clash with what other Christians believe at times. Here in the Netherlands Christians in general are getting more critique from non-Christians. So yeah, there you go.

As always, constructive critisism is welcome.

I was surprised to see this, Michen ^^
I think it was a very bold and daring move you did by drawing this, I'm proud of you that you feel open to talk and draw about these things. I think it was a nice touch you made Jesus look more as a furry. Heck if we're going with the phrase: 'God loves all', then he would love furries too.
I understand why some people might be against it, not necessarily Christians, but I understand why they might think in particular as this being 'wrong' or offensive.

I like the drawing and what you did to symbolise it with.

As for some further commentary/critique (hope you're ok with that? :)): You are very aware of yourself certain things that can be improved upon, which is a good thing. Otherwise you cannot start to improve on things if you want to. I agree, you can make the shading more visible. I do see the shading, but I think you might need to 'expand' the area of where you shade, you keep the shading too close to the lines. If that makes sense.
I think the head could be drawn a bit larger in comparison, the lower legs/feet a bit longer. I noticed the head also doesn't have ears, but you seem to portray a feline (lion?), maybe you could add the ears next time and a mane?
I assume since you wanted to portray Jesus that the furry shown is a male, but the chest you drew seems to look more feminine. When drawing males be aware males have more 'hard' edges. So rectangular shapes apply more to men. Round shapes more to women.

Once again, I like the symbolism and I think you made a daring move there. Well done :)

Post by: Michen_S on March 26, 2017, 03:38:06 PM
Oh shoot, I forgot the ears. Facepaw there. And I wass actually trying to create a female lioness. You know how God is usually portrayed as male? I wanted to focus more on God's female side, because God has that as well. Well, that and a male lion is harder to draw.
Thanks for the critique, I value it a lot. I learn from the problems I see, but constructive critisism enables me to learn from what I overlooked or what is hard for me to see.

It was pretty simple. It took about 30 minutes to come up with it and another hour or so to make the actual .txt document.

I wanted to make something else, but that appeared to be too difficult to actually complete for me. So I decided to make something else instead. This is what came out, and I really like the result. Arms and legs still are a problem, which were the biggest problem. Let me know which 'foot' looks better.

As always, constructive criticism is more than welcome.

Looks pretty good. Uneven eyes but that comes with experience probably. Rest is okay. The foot/paw on the left looks better in my opinion.

I think the foot on the left looks best.  That is my left and not the character's left, lol.  But I'm happy to see more drawings.

Sorry for the late update, we had a few problems with the wireless network in the past time.

It's Michen again. This is probably the drawing I'm going to remake forever to be able to see better how my drawing improves over time. There's now a bandage around the right front paw, and the scarf is now light purple instead of blue. The head is way too small now that I look at it (my dad commented on that too), but I think overall they came out nicely. I'm quite happy with it.

As always, constructive critisism is welcome.

Maybe Michen just gained some weight in the meantime >.>
 <.<
Sorry, had to :3

But in all seriousness, I remember the first drawing you did and this looks indeed like an improvement.
As HellEye pointed out, the head is indeed small. That's soemthing I've noticed with more of your drawings, so maybe focus on that. Draw out the overall distribution (placement and size of everything) and then finish it off.
You have quite a nice style going on and I'm curious to see how it develops :D

Thanks you two. And yes, I tried to make it look more fuzzy than before. I actually thought I wasn't doing it right, but after uploading the picture I saw it went a lot better than I thought it went. I'll look into using that technique more often in the future.

Thanks for the advice, Ventus. I'll look into that.

Heeey! It's been too long since I uploaded something!

Meet Zila, a female character I wanted to use in RPs and future art work. I tried to do some shading for this art piece, but after a while I just gave up on that. And the colour pencils we have here are uhh... still the ones of bad quality. Needless to say it didn't quite come out the way I wanted it to. :/

Anyways, after finishing it I still liked the restults so I'll upload it anyways. So let me know what you think. And now that this is finished, I should start on the next one so I can upload more than 1 drawing every 2 months for a change.

Oh no, it hasn't even been a month yet since I last posted a thing! Now were all doomed! AAAA-
Okie, not really. But here's a small little piece I promised to show off that might be familiar for a few gamers on here... An Osu! life bar, also known as the performance bar or the score bar. It's TFF exclusive... for now, so enjoy.

I also promised I would show what my original problem was, which was this:

The default lifebar usually is just fine, but it becomes incredibly difficult to read once you reach the critical mark (about 20%) and becomes readable again after you raised it a bit again. I know my lifebar doesn't match with the rest of the GUI, but I'll look into that later.

The text on screen shows the song I used a replay of with my former in-game name, along with one of the comments on the beatmap. Osu! is a rythm game, just google it or search it on YouTube if interested, it's very easy to find.

I have risen from my tomb once again! Muahahaha!

So I go to an art club-ish thingy once every week and I got the question there if I wanted to learn how to paint a chicken. And I thought "Why not?" and agreed to it. And then something happened and it ended up being a rooster. A shame, since I did start to look forward to tasting a painted omelette. And I don't like paintings that wake me up at 5 in the morning.

This painting was made with some a bunch a lot
...Most of the work was done by v.d. Velden from the local art group, but we did do this together and she insisted in me signing this work.

Sorry for taking so long again, but I'm also busy with skinning Osu! and two other drawings. One of which I can post soon(ish), so look forward to a semi-spooky surprise within a week or something!

Two pictures in the same month? What heresy is this?
Well, I did promise a semi-spooky surprise. Here's Chandelure!

I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Trust me, the paper version looks better than the scanned one. I also think the shading on this one is a lot better than on my previous drawings, which is always a good thing. I know there's still a lot of room for improvement, don't worry. But I liked working on this one because I pushed myself less hard to make it look good and I just tried to have fun making it. Of course I still did my best!

Oh yeah, some colours are not found on normal Chandelures, but I thought it looked a bit more interesting this way. It's intentional.

Ugh, my writing style there. I've tried to work on perspectives a bit here. Though it didn't come out as perfectly as I wanted, I'm very happy with the details I managed to get in. This one's actually based on a real clock, unlike all my anthro stuff. I know I didn't use the dark lines as I usually do, but I can still add that later if you lot want me to. Feathers/wings are always a complex and tedious thing to draw, but you did pretty well. :)

His body proportions look a bit odd (long torso, short legs), but it also looks like that might have been done on purpose in order to resemble a bird's body.

Do you guys remember Rosea? I... posted her in the previous art thread I made before my account got deleted... And then forgot to include it here... Anyways, I finished her upgraded version now.

Heeeere's ⌿Lanaret! No, the ⌿ before his name is not a mistake, as his name is not "official". Upon birth, children do not have a name. They choose their name themselves later in life. Some children, like ⌿Lanaret, choose to name themselves before adult age. Their names are started with an ⌿ and unlike adults they can still change their name quite easily. Names starting with an ⌿ are "unofficial", but are most commonly used as normal ones. The symbol does not change how you pronounce it. Upon reaching the adult age, they can change their name if they want to and the ⌿ disappears, or they'll choose one if they haven't yet.

Anyways, ⌿Lanaret is an anthro stoat and is based on his previous version Rosea. It is most certainly a he, but his sex is misjudged often. Most of the time he even causes this confusion himself as he likes to trick others. Don't be fooled by his appearance either - he's not as cute as he might look. He's had more life experience than most people his age and can be quite unpredictable at times. Watching him dance is at your own risk. His fur changes with the seasons: he is brown with white in summer and just white in winter, like real stoats.

A red panda technician, ready to fix anything! Okay, anything mechanical. Great climber too, but his running is... Uh... Let's not talk about that. He likes his work a lot. Even managed to set up a little shop, with help from his family. He's the happiest when he's on the job.

I was intending on creating this character later, but I kinda wanted to join a steampunk-ish RP and I had no character fitting for such a situation. Without that RP I might not even have created this character. Anyways, I tried some shading, but uh... It didn't go very well on the suit. It went all right on the tool kit and the head though. So yeah, as per usual, don't be afraid to tell me what you think, I can handle a bit of constructive critisism and it'll help me get even better!

Well, hopefully, the cutie doesn't have to run too much.

Oh, he got average energy. Just... not an average running speed.

Everybody rush on board, because this ship, is about to leave!

Introducing, the S.S. Mystake. One of the first pieces that looks almost as good scanned in as it does on paper. I was drawing something, and then I got stuck. Again. So, that's why the boat.

I also wanted to do something with my grey pencils instead of the coloured ones. I still have some practise to do, but overall I'm very happy with the results. It reminds me the most of those boats you sometimes find inside glass bottles, except this looked so good that I didn't want to draw the bottle. Maybe I could do stuff like this more later on, we'll see.

It looks pretty good! Not many details but it's well polished. Has great depth to it too.

That was what I was going for! I wanted to prevent this (http://webcomicname.com/image/167209264584) from happening... I think I did.

Yes, I'm still drawing!

I've been busy with a lot in the past, especially with setting up stuff for Twitch. Nevertheless, I'm now back to drawing a little bit after everything and this is the first thing I finished in a long time. Don't worry, there's more to come soon. Either way, I like making greyscale drawings for some reason. I dunno, just a preference.

Looks pretty good. Lots of detail, perspective is fine.
Can't wait to see more

Yay, I uploaded something again!

It's a city. Factories in the background, houses out in the front. I... have no idea what that thing in the middle is supposed to be. Let me know what your thoughts are.

For the houses, I played around with pencils of different hardnesses. I think it created a rather interesting city design, seeing how the houses contrast from each other. So I like the effect. I might want to keep that little drawing trick in mind, as it's actually very easy to execute. It just took so long to fill everything!

I like how the houses look. You did a good job Ruth those.

And clearly it's a city hall with a clock in the middle

Why is the sky red though?

Because I was planning it to be morning, but with the sun not fully up yet. Imagine it hiding behind the factories.

Makes sense. Though I think it could use a bit of gradient to show that. Have a part of the sky brighter and then getting darker the further it is from the sun.
It's really uniform now is all. Still good.

Quite possibly one of my faster drawings, despite the long time in-between uploads. Made with higher quality colouring pencils, not the kind meant for little kids where the point breaks off easily. You know, the ones I used up to now. I'm happy with the results!

I don't really have much else to say about it. It should speak for itself, methinks.

It took a while and quite a bit of effort to finish this one. The picture is not as 3D as I wanted it to be, but I no longer care. It was mostly me making some fanart to practise the blending effects of my new art toys. I'd say that part went pretty well! Worth every minute spent on it!

First one to recognise what this is and where it's from gets a cookie.

I don’t get a cookie but I like the drawing. The way you rendered the craggy parts of the rocks is very good.

Yeah, I'm happy with how that turned out. I would say it looks even better on the scan than on the actual drawing, which doesn't happen all too often.

Yeah that's rare, at least without some careful color correction.

A dark piece I've been working on. This was actually inspired by my father, who said I should draw a snow leopards in jeans. And then my mind came along and turned it into this.

I couldn't quite get the colours I wanted to get, but it came out well nevertheless. It was a good drawing to get some more experience with blending colours together. ...Did I mention I love my new colouring pencils?

The last drawing for trying out my colouring pencils. The blending of different colours went pretty well in this picture. Shading, though... Not as much. I feel that the entirety of the picture just came out a little too dark. Well, something to keep in mind for shading next time, I guess!

Now that this picture is posted y'all can get ready for more furry-related pictures again. The first one is in the works.
