Title: The Dead City of Bel-Aquain
Post by: Lumnos Many-Fur on August 09, 2013, 05:06:14 AM
(Just a bit of fun. Set in a tolkeinish-medieval universe. Feel free to join in.)

Tana pulled the last few remnants of the Rana-bird's cooked meat from the stick with his rear teeth, before tossing the stick into the fire. He licked his chops and wiped his muzzle clean with the back of one prehensile paw, and tossed another branch on the fire.

Darkness was gathering around the stone towers and buildings surrounding him, turning the arched windows into so many empty pits of blackness. A chilly damp wind ruffled his dark grey fur.

His fox ears had picked up no sounds of danger that evening, the place was nearly silent. It was errie, compared to the noise of a living forest at night. After a glance at the rubble-strew streets, Tana settled back on his haunches and pulled the bow from his shoulders. He set it aside, but within easy reach. He had learned the hard way to be cautious in the last few months, he was far outside his home territory, beyond the boundaries of any map he'd ever seen and the reckoning of the sages of the White Towers.

He took the quiver from his left shoulder, pulling out a bundle of long straight sticks he'd cut earlier in the wood outside the city. from the leather bag at his side he pulled the green-feathered wings of the Rana-bird, and with a small knife set about turning the feathers into fletching for new arrows.

From far away in the distance, a lizard named Rig was watching through his new invention, binoculars. He noticed that he made a fire near the "things" nest. If he doesn't help him, he'll die or just become another one of those beasts. He starts walking near him, if he suprises the traveler, the traveler will attack. So I can allow myself to be loud. Just once...

Tana's ears shifted quickly toward the noise. He softly picked up his bow and laid it across his knees, nocking an arrow in the string. It would be easy to reach should he need to draw it, but not too threatening to whoever might approach

"In the name of Tobarthu, if you come in peace be welcome." He said loudly, seeing a figure approach. Not that that greeting means much out here. He thought darkly. Old habits and all.

"I come in peace, but we need to talk urgently. You are near the beast's cave, you'll be attacked soon if you don't put out that fire and follow me your as good as dead."

High above the forest Radina flew. Her wings fluttered quickly and her ears listened closely for any sounds down below. She spots a red glow of a fire in the distance, her curiosity entices her to get a closer look.

Tana's eyes widened in surprise, and he couldn't help but glance to either side. He frowns and curses inwardly, disliking the fact that he hadn't noticed the 'beast's' lair. New as he was to the area, it was probably something he couldn't recognize.

"Very well." He says with a nod to the lizard. He grabs the bow, keeping the arrow in place under his grip, and kicks dirt over the fire with one foot. The light vanishes and milky smoke rises from the ashes. He shoulders the quiver with the other paw, leaving the Rana-feathers and unfinished arrow shafts. No sense in taking them if it was this urgent, and if he needed the bow he might well find himself trying to shoot useless sticks by accident.

Tana starteds to follow the lizard, keeping wary eyes and ears on his surroundings, but also on who he is following. He'd learned the hard way not to fully trust everyone who gave a word of peace, particularly those who came in darkness. Until he knew for sure he'd keep his bow ready.

The red glow disappeared and smoke wafted up into the dark sky. Radina squeaked into the night, the 'echo' came back to her. Two people were walking through the forest, dangerously close to the beasts lair. She decided to follow, she flapped her wings and lowered down to the top of the tree line.

"Very well." Tana says, following the lizardfolk toward the house.

He glanced behind them at the sound of several chirps at the very edge of his hearing, but saw no movement in the misty streets. He slipped through the doorway and stood against the wall just inside, out of sight from anyone looking through the door, but close enough to make a quick escape if need be. He put one foot back against the wall, still holding the arrow in his bow at the handle.

"I am called Tana, and I am indeed now to this land." He said guardedly. "Might I know your name?"

"Rig", he said," This land has prospered over 100's of years. It was a democracy here and we liked to keep it that way. We defended against many attacks against people who wanted to change us. We were free here. There was religious freedom, no discrimination against anything, and had glorious artwork. We were a strong land. Until that unfortunate day. I was a scientist, I studied how to cure these new pesky diseases popping up. I myself was constantly at work. One day I was so sleep deprived, I feel asleep while working. I accidentally mixed 2 deadly microbes from 2 simialiar but different strains. I could of stopped the virus from spreading except I didn't know I mixed them, so I sent it in to cure Skin Forrest Disease. That what made those horrible things. I still think of that everyday, I've almost considered suicide. To pass my time and depression I started inventing. There are many scraps here and there. Here is my latest.* takes something out of his bag and holds out something that looks like 2 short metal poles* I call them Binoculars, they allow you to see stuff from far away. Radina perched on a tree branch just out side a woren house. She watched to figures disappear inside. She strained to hear what was going on. She thrived on curiosity and often got into situations that almost got .her killed, but something told her this time would be different.

"Hm." Tana takes the binoculars and turns them over in his paws, wondering whether they might be magic of some kind. He relaxed a little, sensing honesty in Rig's words.

"The land I come from fall into chaos as well. Black unthinking beasts that drink blood and kill came from the south, they left few survivors among those who resisted. They followed one master, and he now sits on White Hart's throne." Tana's voice lowers as he talks, becoming bitter and wistful. "I was one of the King's guard once, We were assigned to guard the royal family as they fled the capitol. We were separated from the rest, the king and three of us. We escaped but the king was bitten, he did not have long to live. He ordered those of us who survived to flee with our lives. I left, there was little I could do. Perhaps I will go back there one day." His ears turn back for a moment, and then he shakes his head.

"What do the beasts you speak of look like? And how might one fight them?"

Tana quietly steps away from the wall and back half a pace, giving himself room to draw the bow if need be.

Who would answer foe, I wonder? He thought. He readied his bow all the same, holding it low with one paw at the handle, one on the bowstring and the nocked arrow.

"Hello Radina." Tana says with a nod.

He lowers his bow and takes the arrow from the string, placing it back in his quiver. Neither of these creatures seem to be a threat, (at least not to him) and his paws are getting tired. He can grab the arrow again quickly enough if needed.

He listens to the two, half lost in thought about what Rig said of the beasts. After a while he speaks, not really aware that he is interrupting.

"Rig, I have heard of those who can see sickness and cure it like you, though they used magic, or so I believed. They often required an item from the place where the sickness was, water, clothing, sometimes blood, to give them more knowledge of the illness. If you got something of that type, say blood from one of the beasts, could you find out more about them? Enough to make a cure, or learn their weaknesses?"

*sits down and thinks* "Yes, it is possible. But a cure is least likely. It damages their brain horribly, probably not able to be healed. But with a blood sample, I can find a weakness any where and take advantage of it."
*Opens His Fist Which Then Sparks With Lighting* "I might finally might be able to live with myself"

Tana's ears twitch, and he regards the sparks in Rig's claws with dubious interest. Fortunate, you are He thought. To have such a chance. But he puts aside the dark thoughts. He needed to concentrate on the fight ahead, and he'd almost rather fight a blood-mad dragon than an unknown enemy. Almost.

"Very well then. Is there a place where we could pick off one of the beasts, without attracting attention from all of them?"

Radina wandered around the place while the two men talked. She looked at the rotting wood and broken trinkets scattered across the floor. A dark cloudiness filled her eyes as flashbacks ripped at her brain. Fire swirled around her while voices screamed out for help that was never coming, the cave shook and rocks fell. She grabbed her little sisters hand and ran as fast as she could flying was impossible at the time being. Large shadows towered over them but the cave entrance was close. The light burned Radina's eyes and she was forced to close them. She felt the hot sun  hut her face, she smiled with freedom but a forced stopped her. She turned ti look, a large hand firmly gripped her younger sister. It squeezed the life out if her and yanked her from Radina's grasp. She pushed out of the cave and opened her wings, she flew merely by instinct. The burning hot tears obstructed her vision.

Radina shook her head as she cane to, wetness touched her cheeks. Silent tears slid down her face, "we must kill them all!" She said fiercely turning ti the men, hatred filled her body and burned in her eyes.

Tana blinks in surprise when he hears Rig's reply. but says nothing. He didn't like going into a fight with no plan, he'd seen that end in disaster too many times. Still, that was the nature of such things.

One ear turned back as he heard the sound of hoofbeats on the stone and earth. "We're being followed." Tana said to Rig. The gray fox then turned gracefully, reaching back for an arrow, nocking it, and drawing the bow in a heartbeat and a half.

"What do you seek, stranger?" Tana said, aiming just to one side of the creature's shoulder.

((OOC: AlmarRaccoon, we're in a ruined stone city at the moment, not a forest.))

Seeing that the stranger couldn't be one of the beasts Rig spoke of or a creature looking for a fight, Tana lowered his bow. "To a point." He whispered back to Rig. "Let us watch and see."

"From the west, aye?" Tana said to the stranger. "Do you know the lands of Raydeen to the south? Stonemir and the Burning Sea? White Hart ruled those lands once. I left when his kingdom fell, though not by choice. I wander where I will, this land seems to have no laws or ruler forbidding it. There is danger here though, mad beasts that were once like you and I. We seek to cure thier madness, or kill them if we must."

However, I do have a feeling that we didn't all end up here by chance... I, too, was driven out of my homeland. A horrible disease ravaged the lands that was hard to detect until it was too late to treat. I tried to find a cure, but I had no such luck."

Tana tilts his head slightly, a spark of surprise, perhaps bemusement in his eyes. His lips curled into a slight grim smile. "We have much in common then. My home was overrun by savage unthinking beasts, Rig tells a similar story of a sickness that brought madness to this city. Perhaps there is a connection, I did not know of a sickness in my homeland, but that is not my area of knowledge, nor did I stay long afterward."

---

From one of the few intact rooftops nearby, a pair of wide yellow eyes in a black-furred face watched the creatures below. Hungry, so hungry. But hunger did not drive him entirely, even in madness he disliked the taste of those who shared his fur, if for no other reason than that fish and fowl were sweeter.

It was the sound, the sweet, maddening sounds that came from the throats of those things. They tormented him with pain and lost memories, days when bright sun did not hurt and he felt the caress of a gentle paw. Meaningless things, yet they that hurt worse than wounds and cold, it was a hunger no meat or plant could fill.

He had crept here unseen and in utter silence, and in silence he tensed his muscles, drawing his legs beneath him, and sprang with claws extended for the kill...

Tana spun and loosed the arrow as the black form leaped toward them. The creature shrieked and twisted, but couldn't change direction mid-leap, and Tana didn't have time to duck.

It slammed hard into Tana's left shoulder and sent them both rolling head over heels. Tana kicked at the thing, feeling it's claws brush through his fur as he jolted and rolled to one side. Tana got to his feet but didn't have time to reach for an arrow before the creature turned and was almost on him again. Instead he gripped the bow with both paws like a quarterstaff and swing it in a quick arc, landing one blow on the creature's outstretched paw, another on the side of its head.

But then almost faster than Tana's eyes could follow, the creature grabbed his bow and pulled him in close enough to give him a savage kick in the stomach that threw him back aginst the wall.

---

The creature tossed the bow aside and dipped his head, jaws snapping the arrow shaft in his side and spitting it away. He dropped to all fours and gave a worldless howl, the savage joy of the fight overcoming the pain. The horse was too big, he decided. And horses were easy to scare, no threat, they couldn't carry weapons. Instead he charged the standing one that held the bright light in his claws...

Held out his claw and zapped the ground right in front of the beast. "WHERE'S RADINA!" he shouted, he shot another electric shock but the thing almost disappeared out of thin air. Rig then falls to the ground, the thing has pounced on him from behind. The beast was about to bite for the kill, but Rig started glowing with sparks and the creature pounced off.

Tana picked himself up, coughing for breath. He moved forward on three paws to grab his bow, eyes searching all around for thier attacker. But the black furred creature had vanished like a shadow from Almar's grip.

Tana straightened and took an arrow from his quiver. The creature had been long legged, muscular, but slender and quick. He had the uncomfortable feeling that they were up against a Leeska assassin, or what had once been one.

"Leeska. I think. They have magic... like that." Tana said between breaths. He started to turn slowly in place with his bow drawn, looking all around. "I fear it isn't gone for good."

---

The creature hissed in pain as he slithered through the between space and into the physical again. He bit at the arrow shaft, the pain was still there but he couldn't bear to pull it free. Blood. He wanted blood on his fangs that wasn't his own. That would ease the pain.

With another hiss and a pained twist of his body he slipped back into between, an unseen shadow. He drifted over the food-things. The gray one that gave him pain... no, the tricky one, the food-thing that hurt and fought. Food should not rise up, could not!

He slipped out of the between space in the air above the striped one and plummeted toward it with a snarl. He wanted blood!

"No." Tana said. His reply was short but there was concern in his eyes.

He put the metal arrowhead, pried from the broken arrow shaft in the beasts side, in a pouch on his belt, along with a knife. He picked up his bow and stood, wincing a little. His back would hurt for a few days, but nothing that wouldn't heal on its own. "We should move before anything else comes sniffing around." He said. He'd sat upwind of the Leeska's carcass, the scent of blood and death was bad enough but this had a nasty, poisinous tang.

"Are you well enough to go far Rig?" Tana said, looking to the lizardfolk. Almar had seemed to think he'd be alright, but Tana wasn't so sure, and he didn't trust Almar too much yet. Bad enough to have one danger too look out for He thought with a slight frown.

Rig looked at Tana with some worry. "We can't afford to lose this sample. No time to waste!"

Rig put his knife in his sheath and looked at his side. It looked almost slashed. If it got infected, he would soon become a beast like the one he killed. No this can't happen, not yet. When we get back, I can do my best to sterilize it.

Rig looks at them. "Come On, No Time" and starts walking in a rather fast pace to get back

Tana brought up the rear, his eyes and ear open to be sure they weren't followed. The moon cast a silvery light over the dead city, just enough to see by and to give the place an unearthly feel.

Twice Tana heard a tiny scuffling, scratching noise, but it turned out to be only thin mice gnawing and scurrying through remnants of cloth and long empty husks and shells of food. Once he drew his bow in alarm at the sound and movement of a ragged curtain flapping loose in an open window, but then shook his head at his own nervousness and walked on.

Most worryingly, there was no sign or sound of Radina. She seems to know the land and the dangers, at the least. And quiet as it is I would have heard another fight. He shivered a little at the cold night air. Soon enough they approached thier destination...

Rig then realized his house right in front him. He rushed in and started having trouble doing anything. His thoughts were being invaded, but not altered. "You may follow me in the lab but I prefer you not" he said urgently and ran down to the lab. He then grab a needle in to slow down the process of his "transformation" and jabs his side. He then cleans the wound and takes out the infected needle and starts working quick.

"In that case, I'll stand watch."

Tana looked at Rig with worry, hoping he knew what he was doing. But there was little he could do in either case, and after Rig disappeared inside his lab, he followed Almar out the front doorway.

He yawned as he scanned the empty streets. He was tired, cold, hungry and his stomach ached from where the Leeska had kicked him. But he had a sense of something he hadn't felt in a while. A reason to keep facing the dawn each day, a purpose. Lets hope it ends better than the last one, aye? He thought darkly. But still, it felt good to have a chance at doing something that mattered.

I need to work swiftly, Wait, No I don't I can eat the food I've been saving,*Smacks himself* GET IT TOGETHER IN THERE. Rig starts examining the strain under the microscope. What, this is way too easy of a strain to cure. They would of found a cure at the hospital already. No wait, it must have mutated. Right now it must still be mutating but accidentally made it weaker. If I do this.. Yes....IM NOT GONNA BECOME ONE! Rig then transfers the sample to needle and jabs it in where the wound is. Hopefully this works...
